Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about handmade pyrography commissions from Fire Drawn — leather, burned by hand, shipped to the United States.

What is pyrography?

Pyrography is the craft of drawing with a heated burning pen on leather. Every line is burned in by hand — not printed, not stamped, and not cut by a laser. At Fire Drawn, Juan Pedro López uses that process to make one-of-a-kind leather scrolls, journals, scripture covers, and other custom leather pieces.

Is Fire Drawn handmade or laser?

Handmade only. Juan burns every line with a burning pen. No lasers, no laser-cut outlines, no printed fills. If you want machine engraving, this studio is not the right fit — and that is intentional.

Who is the artist?

Juan Pedro López is a self-taught pyrography artist based in Montevideo, Uruguay. He has worked by hand since 2003 under the Fire Drawn studio name, burning original images into cowhide prepared for pyrography.

What can I commission?

Leather scrolls and leather wall pieces, cowhide agendas and journals, scripture and sacred book covers, plus bags, tablet covers, and other leather work when the design fits the craft. Fire Drawn focuses on leather so pieces ship well. Browse the Gallery for finished examples, then start a Commission with your story and reference photos.

How does a commission work?

You share the story and references → we send a mockup → 50% deposit via Stripe invoice or Payment Link in USD → Juan makes the piece in Montevideo → balance before we ship FedEx to the United States. See Commission.

How much does a custom piece cost?

Published USD prices are on the Custom price list. Free shipping to the US via FedEx. 2 items: 15% off each. 3 or more: 20% off each. Large wall pieces or scrolls and any custom piece $500+ stay at 15% on multi-item orders.

Do you ship to the United States? What about customs?

We ship to the United States from Montevideo, Uruguay. Free shipping to the US via FedEx. Special commissions outside normal scope may have different shipping. International duties, if any, are the recipient’s responsibility. See Shipping.

How do I pay?

After mockup approval, we send a Stripe invoice or Payment Link in USD for 50% (of the discounted total on multi-item orders). Balance is due before the piece ships. The deposit is non-refundable once work begins, unless Fire Drawn cancels.

Can I return a custom piece?

Custom commissions are final sale. If something arrives damaged, report it within 48 hours so it can be reviewed under the Returns policy.

How long does a commission take?

Typical studio time once materials are in: about three days for a full scripture cover or small agenda; a larger leather wall piece can take up to about five days. The real queue is confirmed in your quote. Ask for timing when you request a commission if you have a hard date (wedding, dedication, gift deadline).

Can you burn from a photo or portrait?

Yes — photo and portrait commissions are a natural fit for pyrography when the reference is clear. Send the highest-quality photo you have with your Commission request; Juan Pedro will say what will read well burned into leather. Tiny or soft family photos that will not read as faces are declined.

What leather do you use?

Cowhide prepared with natural tannins so it will accept the burn. Chrome-tanned leather will not. Hides are chosen for how they take fire — often Brazilian stock prepared for burning, not always Uruguayan. Exact hide and finish are confirmed on the mockup.

How is a pyrography scripture cover different from an engraved Bible cover?

Many “custom Bible covers” online are tooled, stamped, or laser-engraved leather. A Fire Drawn scripture or sacred book cover is freehand pyrography — the image is burned in with a pen, one line at a time. Same gift intent; different craft and look. If you want burned art rather than machine engraving, say so in your request.

Why commission from Uruguay if I live in the US?

You get Juan’s hand and materials, invoiced in USD through Fire Drawn LLC, with FedEx shipping to the United States. Craft origin is Montevideo; payment and delivery are set up for US buyers. Shipping and customs details are on the Shipping page.
